“My early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.” 🌏 This message was sent to the press in an email by environmental activist and attorney, David Buckel, who walked into Prospect Park, doused himself in gasoline, and set himself on fire on the morning of April 14, 2018. He expressed the hope that his death would encourage others to be more mindful of our planet. Brooklyn-based photographer Joel Sternfeld happened to be in Prospect Park that day. The following day, he began to document the gradual regeneration of the site to honor Buckel’s hope. “Our Loss,” which comprises seventy-four photographs in total, is part of an ongoing series by Sternfeld on the effects of climate change. It is a remarkable example of the quintessential relationship between photography, grief, and remembrance.
